Vacuum Package for Refinery
CHALLENGE: Design the vacuum package, given the constraint of functionality of vacuum distillation and maintain the structural stability governed by increased loading and seismic conditions.
SCOPE: Design vacuum distillation unit for a refinery with a preliminary design layout of a vacuum column tower with ejectors, safety valves and heat exchangers on the vacuum column. This design arrangement entailed vacuum column load be designed for 250 MT.
SOLUTION: To reduce load on vacuum column, the vacuum package structure was raised aside the column and the ejectors were arranged vertically along the column height and this optimized design condensed the flat building structure to a much smaller footprint of 800 m 2 in comparison to the one spread out 5600 m 2 during FEED design. The ejectors in vertical arrangement reduced the pressure drop – which determined the package efficiency. The simplified design reduced the structure loads and the associated piping loops, welding costs etc., causing significant savings for the project.

CHALLENGE: Design a manifold extract ventilation system without duct dampers and maintain air pressure differential between open kitchen and customer seating.
SCOPE: Air-conditioning and Ventilation of a biggest fast food restaurant chain with open sitting and kitchen-serve areas. The design basis was to prevent food smell from entering the customer seating area.
SOLUTION: Developed and designed ‘static air balancing’ method for extract air ventilation, consisting welded sheet metal air ducts. Each kitchen hood extract was balanced for pressure loss resistance to the most constrained extract flow based on resistance of each kitchen equipment and associated extract ductwork. Though each equipment had different exhaust capacity requirement, this exemplary method could achieve the designed extract and the desired air pressure in the kitchen and seating areas.

CHALLENGE: Master-plan approval from the Development Authorities, keeping all stakeholders and project dependencies in consideration.
SCOPE: The site area approximately 750 acres required for development has a capacity of 4 assembly lines planned in 4 phases. The clients were obtaining the approval at 4 intervals by paying circa 3.5 million USD each interval for the amendment/ inclusion. This had a significant bearing on the project schedule and cost.
SOLUTION: We urged and enabled the client to prepare the entire masterplan, including all the phases planned in conjunction with the byelaws and get this approved at one go- thus achieving schedule compression by fast-tracking and saving around 7 million USD, which was then utilised for research and development work.
